I have long been attracted to the simple, graceful, stone animal carvings (called "fetishes") of the Southwest's Native American Zuni Tribe. My briar burl creature pipe was inspired by a carving I acquired from Zuni elder Lynn Quam and reveals its stunning grain in a highly contrasting char finish; its reflective eyes are of polished 14k gold.

One gets a little nervous when shaping such a magnificent briar burl as this, flawless throughout the working and so handsomely grained. I am very pleased with the outcome. It has a classic presence, its form both fresh and familiar.

This chunky, compact earthen finished pipe fills the hand with beautiful varied grain - intriguing birdseye on one side, flame grain on the other, and a cross grain beneath. It balances upright and spins entertainingly on its full, softly rounded bottom.

This softly triangulated bent is unusual in the manner in which it was made. It was completed twenty years ago; and there was one blemish in the briar's marvelously grained and otherwise flawless surface. This year I decided to risk the piece, sanding through the blemish to clear wood, and re-shaping the pipe in the process. With dramatically strong, symmetrical and consistent grain throughout, an especially long and sweeping shank, a commodious bowl and a wide and most comfortable saddle bit, this pipe proved worth the risk.

A small but quite active "volcano" pipe, with marvelous grain all round, a natural rough bark bottom, an angle cut sterling silver band, and a tapered bite proof mouthpiece fashioned of 1930's ebonite. This is one special little pipe. In ember finish.

This sculptural pipe in olive oil finish was featured in Pipes and Tobaccos magazine. The spectacular graining is tight, straight, and consistent throughout. A couple of small sand spots on its otherwise flawless surface testify to the briar burl's challenging existence in the dry, rocky, windblown Mediterranean soil.

No consideration was given to the weight of this intriguing hand pipe.
I wanted to use as much of this wondrously grained burl as I could. Asymmetrically carved with one side scooped and the other fully rounded, this pipe is like a globe in the hand. In a polished earthen finish, this great chunk of a piece sits and spins in a delightful manner with the slightest touch upon its rounded bottom of beautiful Birdseye grain.

I find this to be a truly beautiful pipe. The refinement of its shape, the blissful mating of briar with bamboo, and the absolutely exquisite grain throughout the entire piece make this extraordinarily light pipe of under one ounce a work of art. The tapered mouthpiece is single holed and biteproof. The briar burl, in rubbed olive oil finish, will color admirably as it ages.
