I have long been attracted to the simple, graceful, stone animal
carvings (called "fetishes") of the Southwest's Native American Zuni
Tribe. My briar burl creature pipe was inspired by a carving I
acquired from Zuni elder Lynn Quam and reveals its stunning grain in
a highly contrasting char finish; its reflective eyes are of
polished 14k gold.

This softly triangulated bent is unusual in the manner in which it
was made. It was completed twenty years ago; and there was one
blemish in the briar's marvelously grained and otherwise flawless
surface. This year I decided to risk the piece, sanding through the
blemish to clear wood, and re-shaping the pipe in the process. With
dramatically strong, symmetrical and consistent grain throughout, an
especially long and sweeping shank, a commodious bowl and a wide and
most comfortable saddle bit, this pipe proved worth the risk.
